Applying for a Feasibility Study
Description
The Feasibility Study Core will fund three projects this year. Each project is awarded $20,000 for a one- year period.
Eligibility
1. Applicants for a Feasibility Study must be an Exploratory Center member. How to Become a Member.
2. Applicants must be
a. An established investigator in the scientific area of inquiry with a proposal for testing the feasibility of a new or innovative idea that is conceptually related but represents a clear and distinct departure from his/her ongoing research
b. An established, supported investigator with previous work in the scientific area of inquiry who will test the applicability of his/her expertise on a conceptually related problem
c. A new investigator who has not been a Principal Investigator in the past, or who is not currently funded with a DHHS research project grant
Review Criteria
The applications for Feasibility Study funding will be reviewed by the directors of the Feasibility Core, with special attention paid to whether the proposal:
1. Is consistent with the aims of the center
2. Is innovative
3. Is feasible
4. Has appropriate methodologies
5. Has an appropriate budget
6. Has appropriate consents and protocols
7. Indicates the expected use of study results in future funding applications

General Instructions
The Exploratory Center Feasibility Study Application uses a portion of the PHS398 forms. The forms and the instructions for these forms can be found at the following site:http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html
Please follow the format specifications and the directions for each section that are outlined in the PHS398 instructions.
Grant Assembly
Note that not every PHS398 form is required for this application. Also make note of the page limitations required for sections a-d of the Research Plan for this application.
Please assemble your grant in the following order:
1. Prepare a cover letter
a. Describe how your proposal links to the aims of the Exploratory Center
b. If you have previously received CIMRR feasibility study funding, describe the progress you have made as a result of that funding, including publications, grant submissions, and grants awarded
2. Current NIH biosketch
3. PHS398 Form Page 1: Face Page
4. PHS398 Form Page 2: Description, Performance Sites, Key Personnel
5. PHS398 Form Page 4: Detailed Budget for the Entire Budget Period
6. Research Plan NOTE: items a-d are not to exceed a total of 10 pages
a. Specific Aims (1/2 to 1 page)
b. Background and Significance (1-2 pages)
c. Preliminary Studies (2-3 pages)
d. Research Design and Methods (3-4 pages)
e. Human Subjects Research
f. Vertebrate Animal Use
g. Literature Cited
Human Subjects and Vertebrate Animal Use
Verification of Human Subjects and Vertebrate Animal approval must be received before study funds are released. We must have verification that the approval forms have been submitted for review at the time of proposal submission ( October 1, 2007).
